Chandigarh – The queen of the north

This is one city in India that actually has a worldwide recognition for its greenery and cleanliness. Chandigarh is a Union Territory and is controlled primarily by the Union Government although it serves the capital of both Haryana and Punjab. Known for its love for greenery and the modernity, this city has been nicknamed as the ‘city beautiful’ by many people.

The History: Chandigarh has the honour of being the first planned city in India after independence and the architect extra-ordinaire, Le Corbusier himself was responsible for the planning. Being close some to many rivers, fossil of many ancient plants and animals were discovered from here and it is said that Chandigarh might have been the home of Harappans some 8000 years ago. After the partition of India, Chandigarh became the capital of then Punjab.
